On 8th March 2024, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies, Tezpur University visits Harchura Tea garden, Sonitpur district on the occasion of International Women’s Day. 133 number of participants attended the programme. First of all Mr. Sunny Bagh , a member of the local community addressed the gathering and welcomed the students and faculty members from Tezpur University. He gave a brief introduction of Tea Tribe community and gave a gist about caste systems in the society. Dr. Mousumi Mahanta, Assistant Professor (Centre for Women Studies,TU) gave a talk on ‘Rape’ as it is increasing in India day by day. As per some report its almost 1000 rape per day, some of them are being recorded in the police station but some are unreported. To eradicate this crimes and to celebrate the contribution of women on the International Women’s Day, Dr. Mahanta said we should focus on the hardship, service, and sacrifices of women and also try to uplift the status of marginalized women in the society by creating a society where discrimination doesn’t exist. The problem of women differ from place to place like the urban women will have their own problems and the rural have their own so the solution to the problem will also differ. Dr. Mahanta explained about the digital era and how it’s impacting our youth. She also gave insight on human trafficking and how women and children are the soft targets of the traffickers. Sometimes boys are also trafficked. Abhijit Baishya, Professional Assistant, Centre for Women Studies, TU, explained about cybercrime and types of cybercrime. Sonali Boro( research scholar) explained about the human trafficking with reference to “Xupadhora” how their own relatives can be involved in that chain and thus they have to be careful. She warned girls to be aware of whom they are talking and meeting. She concluded her speech by informing them about one stop Centre and asked them to raise voice against those crimes. Open Elective students of the centre presented skits on Human Trafficking and Cyber Crime.
