Event Description

A sensitization programme on Women Trafficking was held on 21 Dec 2016 at Bhalukupong Gaon, Chariduar, Sonitpur, Assam. Mousumi Mahanta, Assistant Professor, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women’s Studies, Mridula Sarma Assistant Professor of Tezpur Law College, Project Staff, Research Assistant and Professional Assistant of Chandrabha Saikiani Centre for Women’s Studies along with villagers actively participated in the programme. Head Man of the village was felicitated by the Centre for immense support and help for the programme. Mousumi Mahanta delivered a talk on women trafficking. She explained about the problems women have to face in day to day life. She also described the disadvantage of border areas and it impact on people living in it. She further suggested people to be more conscious, sensitive, active and assertive to achieve the basic rights of the women. In the open discussion a lady told about 12 years of age girl who was abducted from home by unknown person then raped and murdered. After three day her nude dead body was found in jungle. Villager reported police and dead body was post-mortem but accusers are not identified yet. Another lady also opined that many women are bring from different places to the hotels of that area for pornography shooting, prostitution and other sexual activities. People living that area feel very sad to witness such situations. Two or three times some lady get together and caught couples and handed over to police but police did not respond positively. Mridula Sarma delivered a lecture on law relating to trafficking. She clarified that law is for all people irrespective of class barrier. She guided people to take help from District Legal Service Authority.
