Field visit at Jamuguri, Pirakata village, Sonitpur

On 18th July, 2023, Dr. Madhurima Goswami and Dr.Ivy Daimary,CSCWS,Tezpur University visited Jamuguri, Pirakata village, Sonitpur district for a research work on “Doudinis (priestess) of Assam”. An interview session was arranged with the village members. Dr.Goswami and Dr. Daimary interacted with a priest, Mangal Daimary who is the Bor Deori in the village. The priest narrated about the present condition of their belief on ‘Kherai’. He said that the festival is not celebrated as it was done before. For a long period of time there is no initiation of any doudini in the village. The village has stopped Buli Bathou and shifted to Bibar Bathou.

They do not offer animal sacrifices in Kherai but offer flowers to the deities. Mr. Joyram Mochahari, brother of Tamuli Mochahari(doudini) and Lemoi Mochahari(doudini) narrated about the life of his sisters’ role as doudini. He narrated their struggles and challenges as doudini. The villagers gave their outlook on the transition phase of the ‘Kherai'
