Enriching Dance Research with Scientific Perspectives

On the 22nd of November 2024, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre of Women Studies, Tezpur University in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Studies organized a talk on “Enriching Dance Research with Scientific Perspectives” at the seminar hall of Cultural Studies Department, Tezpur University. 60 number of participants attended the talk. The esteemed Professor V. Madhurima, Physics Department, the Central University of Tamil Nadu, was invited for the session to give the talk and share her insightful experiences in that field. Professor V. Madhurima being the woman from science put forwarded a significant relation between science and dance. And it is to mention that her works include physics in arts. Her speech provided a new lens to the participants to look into the matter of science and how it enriches dance. She went on to the discussion of how traditionally rich her culture is and in that context, it influenced her works in enriching arts in the field of science. To practically show the participants the art of dance, the speaker asked two students to perform two classical dance forms, Satriya and Odissi. And then the speech went on to the connectivity threat which she called Natya Shastra. Her discussion regarding the dancers’ understanding of movement and its relation with physics sparked a discussion with participants present there. The speaker further pointed out how it was arts and culture that documented science during the initial days. Therefore her insights uncovered the hidden relation science, arts and culture. Prof V. Madhurima concluded the talk with her analysis in the matter of scientific research helping in advocating the cultural importance of dance in the society.
