The Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women, in collaboration with Shankara Cancer and Research Institute, organized a Breast Cancer Awareness cum Screening Program at Tezpur University on 12th March, 2025 on the occasion of International Women’s Week. The event was held in the Council Hall in the presence of Vice Chancellor Prof. Sambhu Nath Singh. 292 number of participants attended the programme.The keynote speaker was Dr. Venkat Pradeep Babu Koyyala, Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Oncology, Shankara Research and Cancer Institute who provided valuable insights into the risks, prevalence, and prevention of breast cancer. The session commenced with the thought-provoking question: "Are we at risk?" Dr. Koyyala highlighted that the Northeast region of India is the cancer capital of the country, with a significantly high incidence rate. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR) has released a report detailing the cancer burden in the region. According to him, the reasons for high cancer prevalence- Tobacco-related cancers : 57% in men and 28% in women. And Infections: account for 20% of cancer cases. Delhi reports the highest cases of breast cancer in India. And in the Northeast, Arunachal Pradesh, Cachar, and Dibrugarh have the highest breast cancer cases. The session also included the journey of a cancer survivor, Deepshikha, who shared her battle with the disease, inspiring many attendees. The talk also touched upon the "Angelina Effect," which refers to the impact of celebrities like Angelina Jolie raising awareness about genetic risks and preventive mastectomy. And a glimpse of Project Soundarya was shown in the session which aimed at spreading awareness and early detection of breast cancer. At last, the program concluded with an important discussion on vaccination and medication for breast cancer prevention, emphasizing the role of early detection and medical advancements in fighting the disease. This awareness session was an eye-opener for many, stressing the importance of regular screenings, lifestyle modifications, and timely medical intervention in combating breast cancer. The screening programme was held at the health centre of the University.
