WELCOME

Department of Physics has stridden out not only in its post-graduation teaching but also in new frontiers of research since its commencement in January 1998. The department offeres two-year M.Sc. course in Physics along side Integrated M.Sc. and Integrated B.Sc. B.Ed course. It offeres dual specialization for post-graduation which may be selected from Condensed Matter Physics, Nanoscience & Technology, High Energy Physics, Electronics, Photonics, Plasma physics and Astrophysics. The Department inculcates the spirits of research and can boast of some good research work carried out here, the thrust areas being Nanomaterials, Solid State Ionics, Theoretical High Energy Physics, Plasma Physics, Optoelectronics, Microwaves, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Soft matter physics, Material science and Nonlinear dynamics.

    Message from HoD

      At the outset, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all stakeholders of the Physics Department and Tezpur University as a whole for completing 25 years of glorious existence alongside the journey of our university. I still vividly remember the inauguration day of our department, which I attended as a student in the first MSc batch, graced by the esteemed scientist Late Prof. Raja Ramanna.

      What began as a humble department with just two permanent faculty members, two ad-hoc faculty, one technical assistant, two office staff, and 14 students in our postgraduate program has now transformed into a thriving hub of knowledge. Today, we proudly have 16 full-time faculty members, one Inspire faculty, and 12 staff members, supporting 117 students across various programs (MSc, Integrated MSc, BSc/BEd, and FYUGP). Additionally, over 90 research students are currently pursuing their PhDs in cutting-edge areas of physics.

      Throughout these years, our department has earned numerous accolades at both national and international levels, and our alumni continue to be its proud flag bearers, making significant contributions across the globe.

      With the recent introduction of the new education policy, I am confident that we will offer more flexible and interdisciplinary courses, further benefiting our students in the future.

      As we celebrate our past, I wish for the continued growth of the department. I look forward to our golden jubilee in the next 25 years, where I hope to see our department recognized as a renowned center of excellence in this part of the world, achieving new heights in education and research.
