HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING FACILITY AT TEZPUR UNIVERSITY
A High Performance Computing Centre is inaugurated in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Tezpur University. The Centre sponsored by DeitY is being set up at Tezpur University in collaboration with C-DAC Pune. This sophisticated facility is expected to meet the high performance computing needs of researchers from all over North East India. The facility consists of 12 TF HPC system having 50TB of storage capacity along with three numbers of C-DAC’s indigeneously built PARAM Shavak having compute power of around 3TF each.Inaugurating the facility Prof Gautam Barua, Director of IIT Guwahati, and Chief Guest, mentioned the significance of high performance computing today, including in Big Data Analytics, and expressed the hope that Tezpur University can play an important role in this sphere. Prof D K Saikia, Director NIT Meghalaya who chaired the inaugural session, emphasised that researchers from various fields can collaborate with computer scientists to reap the benefits of parallel computing. Prof R Moona, Director General of C-DAC addressed the gathering from C-DAC headquarters via video conferencing, and expressed satisfaction over the setting up of the high performance computing facility at Tezpur University. He pointed out the problems such as flood and erosion in Assam can be effectively tackled and mitigated by the use of HPC, and TU can play a leading role here.
