Since its emergence in 1969, the philosophy of National Service Scheme has always been on the line of community service, eradication of discrimination and the upliftment of the less fortunate strata of the society. The overall aim of the National service scheme is to give extension to the higher education system and orient the youth to community service. The National Service Scheme develops an understanding in the volunteers about the community in which they work. It involves them in problem solving process, develop a sense of social and civic responsibilities, develop competence and encourages them to find practical solution to individual and community problems. The motto of the organisation : “Not Me But You” reflects the essence of selfless service to the community and appreciation of other person’s point of view and showing consideration for fellow human beings.
Throughout the term of volunteering under the national service scheme, a volunteer acquires the spirit of fraternity, leadership qualities and democratic attitude. A volunteer learns essential values of diversity, mutual respect and fairness in all possible approaches. To promote its values and to ensure the overall development of the volunteer, the National Service Scheme provides a composite training to all the volunteers partaking in the regular activities. Through various initiatives under its banner, like the Gyanmalini (A teaching initiative), Gyaan Utsav(Donation Drive) the volunteers are made acquainted to the essence of community service. Apart from the special initiatives, the regular activities like the observance of Fit India Movement, cleanliness drives, blood donation drives and multiple awareness sessions on different concerning and prevalent topics develop leadership skills, critical thinking and teamwork values in the volunteers. The values that one learns under National Service Scheme ensures that a volunteer develops personality through community service which leads to contribute towards a sustainable society.

National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS is an extension dimension to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions, under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India.
NSS Tezpur University has a volunteer base of around 1000 students belonging to various disciplines of Tezpur University. We work on a diverse range of social issues including blood donation, education, environment, etc. We also collaborate with several NGOs in and around Tezpur University working on these issues.
The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is NOT ME BUT YOU. The Motto of NSS "Not Me But You", reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service.
The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.
