The original Malayalam novel Kocharethi: the araya woman written by Narayan was published in 1998. The same was translated into English by Catharine Thankamma and published by Oxford University Press in 2011. In the preface of the English translation Dr Thankamma wrote, “It is the first Malayalam novel to be written by a tribal about his community and its experiences - the Malayarayar who inhabit the Western Ghats where they border the districts of Central Kerala”. Dr Juri Dutta, Assistant Professor, Centre for Assamese Studies translated the novel from its acclaimed English version (Catherine Thankamma, OUP, 2011) into Assamese. The Assamese translation Kacharethi: araya nari (কচাৰেথি: আৰায়া নাৰী) was published in June, 2018 by Kasturi Prakaxaan, Guwahati.
