DBT Nodal Centre,Tezpur

Medical facility in the North Eastern Region of India is poor as compared to many other part of the country. Researchers having medical back ground are scanty in India as well as in the North East. To uplift the facility of proper future medicine and medical facility India need to put effort in developing manpower directly related to the public health facility. To carry out the same Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India starts the program of DBT Nodal center for Medical Colleges and Biomedical Research Institutes of North East India with Prof. A. K. Mukherjee as Coordinator and Prof. M. K. Chaudhuri, honorable Vice-chancellor of Tezpur University as Chairman for the same. The first interactive meeting for this project was held in 20 July, 2009 in Tezpur University under the banner of Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. As coordinator Prof. A. K. Mukherjee along with other committee members coordinate with the Principals and Directors from different Medical Colleges of North East India. Representatives of all the government medical college and research centers participate in the meeting held with Dr. M. K. Bhan, Secretary, DBT, New Delhi and Dr. B. Dey, Adviser, DBT, New Delhi. The meeting decided to provide different projects on leading health care problems and a center at Tezpur University as DBT Nodal Center for Medical Colleges and Biomedical Research Institutes of North East India. The center will coordinate the financial and technical works necessary to carry out the projects successfully. The center consists of Prof. A. K. Mukherjee (coordinator), two scientists and two technical officers. There are 22 different projects coordinated by DBT Nodal Center in 10 different medical colleges. At present the center successfully transfer first year funds to the respective PIs for starting the project work. Along with the fund transfer the center also provided the breakup guide for utilizing the money. The center also participates in the procurement of instruments, selection of manpower and renovation of laboratories for different projects. To speed up the process of research the center will soon going to organize meeting of the PIs from all different projects. The center also provides update to the PIs regarding the guidelines provided by DBT for construction work, manpower selection and purchase of equipments for running the projects smoothly

Objectives Of the DBT NODAL CENTRE

To act as a facilitator link between DBT and the participating institute/project investigator
To assist the respective research institutes/project investigators in the N-E region under DBT Nodal cell for effective project implementation
To assist the DBT in auditing the accounts
To facilitate visits of the DBT experts from time to time.
Organization of regular meeting of various experts with P.I s. for projects and/or evaluation meetings.
