Tezpur
Tezpur is the headquarters of the centrally located Sonitpur district in
Assam. Mythologically known as Sonitpur, Tezpur is famous as a seat of
Assamese culture. Located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra, 180 kms
north east of Guwahati, Tezpur overlooks the beautiful snow peaks of the
Himalayas throughout the winter. Several ancient sites such as Bamuni Hills,
Hazara tank, Da-Parbatia Gate, Mahabhairab temple, Bhairabi Temple, Agnigarh
etc. in and around Tezpur are worth visiting. The Chitralekha Udyan, the 3.05
kms long Kalia-Bhomora bridge over the Brahmaputra are two spots which
attract many visitors. Other important tourist spots around Tezpur include
Bhalukpung (64 km), Tipi (68 km) which is famous for the largest orchid
garden in Asia, the Nameri National Park (60 km), the Orang Sanctuary (40 km)
etc. The Kaziranga National Park which is the habitat of the great Indian one
horned rhinoceros is 75 kms away from Tezpur.
