Event Description

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a workshop has been organized by the Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies at Chatia College, Sonitpur, 6th March, 2019. The objective of the workshop is to make students understand about gender role and its effect on the society. It was also targeted to make them aware of the life skills along with cyber security in this techno centric world.

Under the theme of “Gender Sensitization” Dr. Mousumi Mahanta, Assistant Professor, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies deliberated with the students. She extensively explained the sex/gender debate by displaying pictures, clipart and cartoons. She talked about socialization processes of gender differences to gender discrimination which promote gender gap. She discussed the crime against women which are going on and on due to the patriarchal structure of the society. Referring distinguished feminist Kamla Bhasin Dr. Mahanta spoke about the upbringing of a boy as masculine and a girl as feminine beings by the parents, schools and the society. Further she recited poems composed by Kamla Bhasin which challenges gender stereotypes of the society.

On the theme of “Skills in Life” Sonali Boro Research Assistant, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies interacted with the students. She defined the meaning of skill and its importance for life. She talked about the differences between general skill and specific skill. Due to shortage of time she could discuss only general skills of life. She spoke about communication skill, decision making, time management, self-motivation etc. she opined that ability to work under pressure is also very important skill in life. To motivate students, she talked about individual talent and its relationship with skills. Finally, students were given a task by which they can identify their own talents. She explained how to transform their own talents into skills through training for their career in future.

Abhijit Baishya, Professional Assistant, Chandraprabha Saikiani Centre for Women Studies demonstrated cyber technology and its security measures. He revealed that our social media accounts are not secure for which many crimes against women is happening in the society. He informed that many fishing sides are available which can hack any account and access personal information along with bank details. He showed measures to be taken while accessing cyber technology.

Around 300 students along with teachers participated in the workshop. Students are motivated from the programme and came up to express their thoughts and feedback.
