Tezpur, located on the banks of the Brahmaputra, is the headquarters of Sonitpur district in Assam. It is an ancient town: the ruins of the temple of Da Parbatia are dated to the 4th Century AD. Tezpur is also considered to be the cultural hub of modern Assam as it is associated with the cultural icons Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Bhupen Hazarika and Phani Sarma.
Tezpur is well connected by road and air to the rest of India. There are daily flights and train services from Delhi and Kolkata (and other places) to Guwahati. A good highway links Tezpur University to Guwahati, which is 175 kms away. There are direct flights from Kolkata two times a week to Tezpur airport.
