Granted the status of ‘Centre with Potential for Excellence in Particular Area’ by the UGC in 2016, the Centre on Cultural Memory in North-East India: A Research and Documentation Programme on Textual and Visual Narratives works with the mandate to explore and analyze texts relating to cultural memories in the context of North-East India, with particular focus on hitherto unexplored sites like photography and other visual narratives, oral traditions in addition to literary texts. This project is aimed at responding to the increasingly felt disparities in terms of listening, recording, documenting and disseminating the various local-specific narratives and worldviews about lived and recollected experiences of different ethnic communities.

The objective of this project is based on the understanding that collective memory and its cultural expressions are highly fluid sites of constructing the self and others, informed by several context-specific factors. The goal of this research project is to specifically understand the various historical junctures of modernity, industrialization and urbanity in the context of the eight different states of North-East India with particular reference to Assam.

Thematic Components:

  • Mercantile History: Production and Market Practices
  • Environmental History: Critical Moments
  • Women and Urbanity: The Advent of New Lifestyle Practices
  • Colonial Ethnographic Writings: Writings and Photographs on North-East India

Methodology

  • Focus on cultural memory
  • Textual analysis of oral, visual and written texts pertaining to the thematic components
  • Collection/Recording of cultural texts and narratives
  • Acquisition of material resources that relate to the thematic components
