Experiment No. 3: Verification of Hooke’s law with the help of a Coil Spring

For this experiment, you have to choose the magnitude of the applied weight (W) on a spring with given but unknown stiffness and measure the deflection (δx) in the spring using the curser position. Take the deflection unit in centimeters.

  • Take at least five readings, i.e. at least five different combinations of (Wi, δxi). Make Table 1 (see below).
  • Determine the slope of the best-fit line as taught in the video tutorial.
  • Plot all the readings on a graph paper with x-axis as deflection and y-axis as applied force (use appropriate scale).
  • Also, draw the best-fit line from the data point.
  • Clearly report the stiffness of the spring that you have found after doing this experiment.
