Dr. Y. N. Utkin (Russia)
Dr. Cassandra Modahl

Yuri N. Utkin received his Diploma in Chemistry from Moscow State University. He then went to do his PhD studies in Bioorganic Chemistry at the Shemyakin Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. After earning his PhD degree he continued his career at the same Institute (now the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences), receiving a DSc degree in 1996 and being promoted to Professor in 2006. Prof. Utkin is the Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Toxinology. His current research interests encompass (i) isolation of proteins with novel pharmaceutical activities from animal venoms; (ii) elucidation of general principles of protein-protein recognition as exemplified by neurotoxin-receptor interaction; and (iii) characterization of ligand-binding sites on neuroreceptors as a prerequisite for rational drug design. Prof. Yu. Utkin has published more than 150 papers in peer reviewed journals, contributed several chapters to toxinology books and has edited recently the book “Snake Venoms and Envenomation: Modern Trends and Future Prospects”. He is a member of the European Society for Neurochemistry, the International Society on Toxinology, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
