Prof. A. K. Mukherjee received B. Sc. in chemistry Hons in 1990 and M. Sc. in Biochemistry in 1992 from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi securing first class first rank in order of merit in both the examinations. He obtained Ph.D. in 1998 on characterization of biochemical and pharmacological properties of cobra and Russell’s viper venom from the Dept. of Biochemistry, Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan. Prof. Mukherjee is the founding faculty member of the Dept. of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Tezpur University. He has been serving as the Dean, Research and Development, Head and Coordinator, DBT Nodal Center for Medical Colleges and Biomedical Research institutes of NE India and Head, ONGC-Center for Petroleum Biotechnology, Tezpur University.

Dr. Mukherjee has visited University of Connecticut Health Center, USA from 2002 to 2003 under BOYASCAST fellowship programme of DST, Govt. of India to work on genetically modified baculovirus expressing insect selective neurotoxin for a superior bioinsecticide property. He also visited at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Northern Colorado, USA from 2011 to 2012 under DBT-CREST award of Govt. of India to work on proteomics strategy to analyze snake venom for cardiovascular and anticancer drugs development.

The current research interest of Dr. Mukherjee includes snake venom biochemistry including proteomic analysis of Big Four venomous snakes from India, microbial biotechnology, and cardiovascular and anticancer drug discovery from natural sources including snake venom. He has received several awards and medals for his academic and research achievements such as Yong Scientist award from Indian Science Congress Association, Association of Medical Biochemists of India, Zoological Society of India, and Physiological Society of India. Besides, Dr. Mukherjee also received BOSCAST Fellowship from DST, Govt. of India, Dr. J. N. Baruah Memorial Science Award, 2010 in Biological Sciences by Assam Science Society, DBT-Crest Award, Units of Excellence Award in NER by DBT, National Bioscience Award from DBT, New Delhi, recipient of Best Researcher Award of Tezpur University in 2008 and Sreenivasaya Memorial Award-2014 from Society of Biological Chemists (India).

Dr. Mukherjee is the founder member of Toxinological Society of India in 2009 at Tezpur University. He has guided several students for Ph.D. and M. Sc. Project work and published more than 85 research papers in peer-reviewed International and National journals, Book chapters and review articles. He is one of the Editors of the Handbook on Toxinology to be published by Springer.
