About The Department

The department of Environmental Science was established in January 2004 with the objective of imparting education on regional and global environmental issues. The department offers two academic programmes M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Environmental Science. The curriculum for M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes focuses on all-important aspects of Environmental Science, covering contemporary problems of nature conservation and environmental quality. Keeping in view the unique physiographic and agro-climatic settings of Northeast as a whole and Assam in particular, the department gives emphasis in teaching and research on various aspects of agro-ecosystem and hill ecosystems of Northeast India.

Programme and Educational Objectives

M.Sc.(Environmental Science)

1. To produce competent professionals with a strong foundation of Environmental Sciences and application to be suitable for vital positions in the academia, industry and government and non-government institutions as skilled manpower.
2. To prepare our graduates to become effective scientific communicators/collaborators in multidisciplinary teams providing technical leadership to engage with the challenging environmental problems of local, national and global nature.
3. To instil the virtues of ethics, integrity and social responsibility in our graduates, and be ready to take up viable mission for the national cause.

Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science:

1. To produce skilled, up-to-date, competent and adequately accomplished researchers in the domain of environmental science capable of taking up research questions independently.
2. Our graduates shall be confident, creative and open minded to take new research challenges and think 'out-of-the-box' research ventures.
3. Our graduates shall adhere to the norms and regulations of quality research ethics.
4. To instil the virtues of ethics, integrity and social responsibility in our graduates, and be ready to take up viable mission for the national cause.

PG Diploma in Environmental & Disaster Management :

1. To impart thorough and in-depth knowledge of different aspects of the management of environment vis- natural and man-made disasters to cater the likely needs of trained personals in government and other organizations.
2. To improve personal management skills, particularly as they relate to public awareness, policy promotion, response operations, training, use of information and inter organizational cooperation.
3. To impart new skills, such as familiarity with major sources of environment and disaster management information.


Program Outcomes

The MSc in Environmental Science programme aims to produce students who at the time of graduation shall be able to:
1. Gain thorough understanding of Environmental Science as collated in the curriculum and developed the capability of self-learning to continue the search for knowledge.
2. Gain skills to apply the knowledge to the environmental challenges before the society of the nature of local, regional, or global dimensions aligned with the economy and sustainability.
3. Gain research acumen and develope critical thinking to carry out research in the domain, and continue learning.
4. Gain exposure and articulation to disseminate the knowledge in formal or informal settings.
5. Acquire the sense of responsibility to safeguard the environment as a constitutional duty.

The PhD in Environmental Science program aims to produce students who at the time of graduation shall be able to:

1. Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to engage in life-long learning and continuing professional development.
2. Identify, analyze, and address an environmental problem to find out an adequate and sustainable solution.
3. Formulate relevant research questions, hypothesis, and objective to initiate research on environmental issues.
4. Plan and conduct experiments, as well as analyse and interpret the results.
5. Handle, run, calibrate, and maintain instruments and apparatus including highly sophisticated instruments like ICP-OES, GC, HPLC etc.
6. Appropriately use and apply different statistical and other software for analyses of experimental data and interpretation.
7. To develop scientific communication skills useful for publishing research findings.
