Haleswar Temple

 

Haleshwar temple is one of the oldest temples of tezpur which is located about 10kms north of Tezpur. This temple is the oldest temple built by the king who established the capital of Kamrupa at Harupeswar. This temple of Haleswsar is a praying point for various communities. According to Mythology, a ‘linga’ was found by a cultivator while he was ploughing in the fields. Cultivator is also known as ‘Halowa’ vernacularly so the term Haleswar is derived from the word ‘Halowa’. A temple was constructed initially on it and later Ahom king Rudra Singha constructed the temple in 1705 A.D.
The speciality of this temple is that it is a worship place for both Vaishavites and Shivaites.
