Child Rights are Human Rights that ensure wellbeing, safety and development for all human beings below the age of 18 years.The four basic classifications of Child Rights as the UNCRC suggests include the Right to Survival, Right to Protection, Right to Participation and Right to Development. Good governance and child rights are mutually reinforcing. It is the onus of a government system to ensure that the rights of children are protected. Awareness generation regarding children and their legitimate rights among children, their parents, teachers, employers, and administrators of the government machinery has always been a felt need.

The course is thus designed to address the key frameworks (International conventions, treaties, and legal provisions), international and national scenario of child rights, and role of state and international bodies in framing, upholding of child rights. Via this course the issue of child rights and governance is explored in the context of India. The course is divided into two semesters and delivered over a period of one year. First semester aims at building an understanding of the conceptual and theoretical framework of construction of childhood, Child Right various legal framework, treaties, conventions and policies. The teaching of the paper also focuses at building an understanding of child related issues of North East.

CG 401 Understanding Childhood The paper gives an overview of social construct and legal construct of childhood; varying legal definitions of children in Indian context; significance of a uniform age definition versus age appropriate intervention; A psychological perspective on childhood is also provided.
CG 402 Child Rights as Human Rights The paper covers themes; evolution of human rights, international human rights and child rights law, the principal human rights instruments, specialized instruments of human rights.
CG 403 Vulnerabilities of Children in the North-East The paper focuses on characteristics of Vulnerability, theories and also on key vulnerabilities of children of North Eastern region.
CG 404 Field Work/Observational Visit Apart from building a theoretical understanding of childhood, attention is paid to building of their knowledge on ground realities, practical application of laws through field visits. Field Work Immersion Program is also included in the course curriculum for deeper engagement with communities, legal and social welfare institutions for children.
CG 405 Communication Skills Communications is considered a significant tool in child rights and governance, hence the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing is being imparted via this paper. The uses of media such as Television, Radio, Face to Face talks are discussed.

CG 406 Social Policies for Children It covers an introduction to Social Policy, Social Protection and Child protection; Social policies and programmes for children.
CG 407 Child Rights as Human Rights It encompasses discussion on constitution of India and rights of child, civil laws, criminal process and the child, mechanisms for implementation and other contemporary questions.
CG 408 Governance and Child Rights The aim of the paper is to build understanding on governance, governance in child rights, dimensions in child rights governance, child rights governance in Indian and North –Eastern region.
CG 409 Research in Child Rights The requisite skills for a researcher are taught; the research process and practice, methods, technique, tools and data analysis and report writing is imparted. The learning process is integrated with issues of children.
