Annotated Bibliography on Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes in Social Sciences & Humanities
About the project

Since the beginning of 21st century, there’s a shift towards research on disadvantaged categories in India notably the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. There are several causes for this change including the enhanced demand for affirmative action in India which may be the result/cause of new wave of intellectual growth in Indian academics. Notable here is the outcome which is witnessed in plenty of literary contribution (albeit exploration continues) towards hitherto marginalized sections notably scheduled castes, and scheduled tribes. There’s an acknowledgement and thus encouraging trend among faculty of social sciences and humanities in universities across the country. This is reflected in different pieces of articulation available in the form of book, research paper and articles. Apart from these, as a consequence of enhanced sensitivity (towards aforementioned social categories) and sometimes for the cause of the same, different committees/commissions are set up to prepare a reflective report.

However, it is also a fact that due to diverse spatial scenario and large number of institutions/literary sources, there’s scattering of available/generated literature. It could become an enhancing factor (to build comprehension or research) for a reader with specialized or general purpose once these are available as ready reference. This has emanated the need for having a compilation of all the available literary materials into one with basic elaboration which can act as an opening to reach the desired/identified source.

In this context idea to conduct research project towards development of source material was conceived. It is an attempt to bring together (to the maximum limit in the period of two years) available literature for the identified dimensions. In order to reduce the scope of having limitations, the study is delimited to the disciplines of Sociology, Education, and Political Science under Social Sciences while English literature formed part of Humanities. These disciplines were selected due to close affinity and therefore possibility for reflection of identified social categories. The time frame for selection of literature/report to generate annotated bibliography is sixteen years starting from 2001-02.

Rationale:

Having no dearth of literature for the broader dimensions of castes, and tribes in India, there’s an emergent need for compilation of the same. The nature of compilation shall be like that of an annotated bibliography which can be utilized as ready reference to give rationale for having fuller access of any selected literature. This can expedite the process of research (apart from usage for general reading), and in a way could enhance the existing level of comprehension about the identified themes especially in social sciences and humanities.
