THE UNIVERSITY

Tezpur University was established in 1994 by an Act of Parliament. It is located in Napaam which is 16 kilometres from Tezpur, the headquarter of Sonitpur district of Assam. Tezpur is linked by road, rail and air with the rest of the country.

Tezpur University is a unitary type of university committed to creating an academic environment for advanced studies and research in diverse areas such as Science and Technology, Environment & Natural Resources, Humanities, Social Sciences and Management Sciences.

Presently, the University has twelve departments and one centre under four schools of studies. These are-

  1. School of Science and Technology
  2. School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources
  3. School of Humanities and Social Sciences
  4. School of Management Sciences

The university has created the following facilities and services for the students and scholars.

University Library

The University has a Central Library with a rapidly increasing collection of books and journals. Most of the necessary books are available. Besides the Central Library, the departments also have their departmental libraries. The catalogue of books and journals is available for users for online access on the campus network.

Computing facilities

The University has elaborate computing facilities accessible to the students. There is a modern state-of-the-art Central Computer Centre for use by the students and scholars of Tezpur University in addition to the departmental computer laboratories. The Centre has a large number of PCs and several servers, all connected to the campus LAN. There are also high quality laser printers, scanners, multimedia accessories, etc. Various software systems are available that run in environments such as UNIX/LINUX, MS-Windows-2000/NT/XP, and Novell Intra Netware. The campus LAN is connected to the Internet through its 128 kbps SCPC VSAT station of the ERNET.

Hostel Accommodation

The University has separate hostels for boys and girls. Candidates have to apply for hostel seats separately in the form attached to the prospectus.

Scholarship

A limited number of scholarships to Tezpur University students are offered by various Government/semi-Governments organizations such as NEC, DBT, ITDP, MNES etc.

Training & Placement Services

The Training & Placement Directorate arranges syllabus-related summer/project training of students and helps in placement of students in various organizations.

Health Service

The University has a Health Centre to provide basic medical services with its own doctors and paramedical staff.

Games and Sports

The University provides opportunities for students to excel in various departments of sports. The University has its own basketball, volley ball and tennis courts, cricket and football grounds and a well equipped multi gymnasium.

Tezpur University Alumni Association (TUAA)

TUAA was formed in 2000 to create a network of the alumni of the university. The web-site of the association provides full listing of events, news and other relevant information.

TEACHING AND EVALUATION

The university follows semester system. Academic year starts from 1^st of August.

Curriculum

Each academic programme is so designed as to provide enough flexibility in the choice of courses that the students would like to take. Besides the compulsory (Core) courses for each of the programmes, the students also have the option to choose courses of their own interest from the Elective lists.

All the students admitted to Tezpur University are required to take one of the courses from a group of General Proficiency courses. This includes Remedial English and courses of general nature offered by various departments from time to time. All the students admitted will be given a test of proficiency in English. Students whose performance in the test is not satisfactory will have to compulsorily take the course in Remedial English. Others will have to take any of the courses from the lists to be offered in this category. These courses are credit courses.

Evaluation system

The evaluation is continuous internal and based on the students' progress in class, assignments, periodical quizzes, laboratory work, case studies, field-work, class tests and semester end examinations.

Grading System

Tezpur University follows a relative letter-grading system as given below.
Grade Grade points Description of Performance
A+ 10 Outstanding
A 9 Excellent
B+ 8 Very good
B 7 Good
C+ 6 Average
C 5 Below Average
D 4 Marginal
E 2 Poor
F 0 Very Poor
I   Incomplete
AP   Audit Pass
AF   Audit Fail
W   Withdrawn
X   Continued Project

Performance of a student is reflected by two indices viz. Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) which is the grade point average for a particular semester, and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which is the weighted average of all the SGPAs of any particular academic programme.

Minimum Academic Requirement

The minimum academic requirement for progress to the next semester of a programme is a CGPA of at least 4.0 at the end of every semester.

The students who fail to maintain the minimum academic requirement at the end of a semester will not be allowed to enroll in the next semester. However, they may seek re-admission to the programme in the subsequent academic year and, if re-admitted, they may be allowed to carry forward the credits for the courses completed earlier.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Enrolment

Every student will enroll himself/herself to the successive semester on a date as notified by Academic Registrar for the purpose. No student is allowed to get enrolled after the scheduled date.

Course Registration

Courses to be taken by the students in a particular semester need to be registered. It is done in two phases: a) Pre-registration b) Final Registration. Pre-registration of courses is required only for the continuing students. Courses to be taken by the students in a particular semester will be done before the end of the previous semester on a specified date. Final Registration is done after completing the process of addition, deletion and withdrawal of courses.

For newly admitted students, pre- registration of courses is done at the time of admission itself.

Attendance Requirement

All students must attend every lecture, tutorial and practical classes [if the corresponding academic programme has practical paper(s) in the syllabus]. However, to account for late registration, sickness or such other contingencies, the attendance requirement will be a minimum 75% of the classes.

A student with less than 75% attendance in a course during the semester in lectures, tutorials and practicals taken together (as applicable) will be awarded an "F" grade in the course irrespective of his/her performance.
